Understanding expression lines

Facial expressions rely on small, repeated muscle movements. Over time, that repeated movement — combined with skin quality, sun exposure, sleep patterns and general facial ageing — can contribute to forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet becoming more visible.

Some expression lines appear mainly when the face is moving; others begin to remain visible when the face is at rest. The pattern is individual, which is why a personalised facial assessment is used to understand your facial anatomy specifically, rather than assuming one approach suits everyone. For background reading, our Knowledge Centre covers what to expect at an aesthetic consultation and how to prepare.

Who may benefit from a consultation?

A consultation is an opportunity to ask questions and receive a considered clinical view. People who often find it useful include those who:

  • have noticed forehead lines, frown lines or crow's feet associated with facial expression
  • would like to understand why certain expression lines are becoming more visible
  • want professional advice about suitability before considering any treatment
  • would like to discuss realistic options before making a decision
  • have had treatment elsewhere and would value an independent assessment

Booking a consultation does not guarantee that any treatment will be recommended or that you will be considered suitable. Suitability is assessed individually and only after the doctor has reviewed your history and goals.

Why book a consultation?

Facial anatomy, medical history, previous treatments, personal goals and preferences may all influence the conversation. A dedicated appointment gives that discussion the time it needs.

  • Individual assessment

The doctor looks at your face at rest and in movement, and considers factors specific to you rather than a generic pattern.

  • Discussion of suitability

Medical history, current medications and previous aesthetic treatments are reviewed to inform the discussion about whether any option is appropriate.

  • Realistic expectations

The doctor talks through what any potential option can and cannot achieve, and what a considered outcome might reasonably look like.

  • Opportunity to ask questions

A private setting to raise concerns, compare options and take away written information before making any decision.

The consultation process

  1. Book your consultation

Choose a time that suits you. The consultation deposit is confirmed at the point of booking.

  2. Discuss your concerns and medical background

Share what you have noticed, your goals and relevant history — including any previous aesthetic treatments.

  3. Receive a personalised assessment

The doctor examines your face at rest and in movement and discusses what appears to be contributing to the pattern you have described.

  4. Review possible options and limitations

You are talked through options that may be appropriate, alongside their limitations. Nothing is decided on your behalf.

  5. Decide whether to proceed

You leave with the information you need to consider your next step in your own time. There is no expectation of same-day treatment.

Consultation details

  • Approximately 30–45 minutes

Unhurried time to discuss your concerns and ask questions.

  • Doctor-led assessment

Your face is assessed at rest and in movement by an experienced doctor.

  • Written recommendations

Where appropriate, key points from the discussion are summarised for you to take away.

  • No obligation to proceed

A cooling-off period is encouraged so any decision is made calmly and with full information.

Preparing for your consultation

To help your doctor-led consultation be as useful as possible, please bring:

  • information about any previous aesthetic treatments, including approximate dates
  • a current list of medications and known allergies, if relevant
  • photographs if you would like to discuss changes over time
  • any questions you would like the doctor to answer

What may be discussed?

Depending on the outcome of the assessment, the doctor may discuss:

  • no treatment, where that is the most appropriate outcome
  • skincare or preventative measures that may support facial skin and facial ageing over time
  • non-prescription aesthetic options, where relevant
  • collagen-supporting approaches or skin quality, which are covered at a separate Skin Rejuvenation or Collagen Stimulation Consultation
  • prescription treatment, only where clinically appropriate and discussed privately during consultation
  • referral or further assessment, if that would be more suitable

Not every option will be suitable for every patient, and no treatment is required following consultation.
