Understanding hair thinning and shedding

Hair concerns can have multiple possible contributing factors. Pattern, duration, family history, general health, medicines, nutrition, stress and scalp condition may all be relevant. Two people describing similar symptoms can have very different underlying pictures — which is why a personalised assessment matters more than a general recommendation.

Hair also passes through a natural cycle, and follicles can move between healthy growth, gradual miniaturisation and dormant phases. Understanding where your hair sits in that cycle helps frame the conversation, informs whether further investigation such as blood tests may be appropriate, and shapes what a considered next step might look like.

Who may benefit from a consultation?

A consultation is an opportunity to ask questions and receive a considered clinical view. People who often find it useful include those who:

  • have noticed increased shedding or a gradual change in hair density
  • are unsure whether their hair pattern is changing over time
  • would like professional advice about possible contributing factors
  • would value discussing whether further investigation, such as blood tests, may be appropriate
  • have tried products elsewhere and would like an independent view

Booking a consultation does not guarantee that any treatment will be recommended or that you will be considered suitable. Suitability is assessed individually and only after the doctor has reviewed your history, scalp and goals.

Why book a consultation?

Hair pattern, scalp health, medical history, nutrition, stress, current medications, personal goals and preferences may all influence the conversation. A dedicated appointment gives that discussion the time it needs.

  • Individual assessment

The doctor considers your hair pattern, scalp condition and factors specific to you rather than a generic template.

  • Discussion of suitability

Medical history, current medications, general health and any relevant background are reviewed to inform the discussion.

  • Realistic expectations

The doctor talks through what any potential option can and cannot achieve, and what a considered outcome might reasonably look like.

  • Opportunity to ask questions

A private setting to raise concerns, compare options and take away written information before making any decision.

The consultation process

  1. Book your consultation

Choose a time that suits you. The consultation deposit is confirmed at the point of booking.

  2. Discuss your concerns and medical background

Share what you have noticed, your goals and relevant history — including family history, general health, medications, nutrition and stress factors.

  3. Hair and scalp assessment

The doctor examines your hair pattern, density and scalp in person and discusses what appears to be contributing to the picture you have described.

  4. Consider whether further investigation is appropriate

Where clinically indicated, the doctor may discuss whether blood tests or further assessment could help clarify possible contributing factors.

  5. Review possible options and limitations

You are talked through options that may be appropriate for your picture, alongside their limitations. Nothing is decided on your behalf.

  6. Decide whether to proceed

You leave with the information you need to consider your next step in your own time. There is no expectation of same-day treatment.

Consultation details

  • Approximately 30–45 minutes

Unhurried time to discuss your concerns and ask questions.

  • Doctor-led assessment

Your hair and scalp are assessed in person by an experienced doctor, considering pattern and density.

  • Written recommendations

Where appropriate, key points from the discussion are summarised for you to take away.

  • No obligation to proceed

A cooling-off period is encouraged so any decision is made calmly and with full information.

Preparing for your consultation

To help your doctor-led consultation be as useful as possible, please bring:

  • a summary of any previous hair or scalp treatments, with approximate dates
  • a list of current medications, supplements and any known allergies
  • relevant medical history, including recent illness, significant stress or dietary changes
  • photographs if you would like to show how your hair has changed over time
  • any questions you would like the doctor to answer

What may be discussed?

Depending on the outcome of the assessment, the doctor may discuss:

  • no treatment, where that is the most appropriate outcome
  • blood tests or further investigation, where clinically indicated
  • scalp or hair-care advice, where relevant
  • non-prescription supportive approaches, considered in general terms
  • procedural options, discussed privately during consultation
  • referral or further assessment with another clinician, if that would be more suitable

Not every option will be suitable for every patient, and no treatment is required following consultation.
